relaxedsequinsYou can always find a time and place to break the rules. I happen to like rule breakers — it shows they're not afraid to take risks.

Just as sequins made the shift from 'evenings out only' to 'anytime of day', so too can pairing flowy on top of flowy.

When Tommy Hilfiger introduced the relaxed silk PJ-ish look a couple of years ago, no one was quite sure how long the trend would last. Now, billowy silk pants have made the big time. Though it's what you mix with them that may surprise you.

Versatility comes with a little creativity. And Free People wins the award on breaking the rules in an oh-so-cool way. Sequins aside, it's the flowy on top of flowy that makes this outfit. Pairing two styles we once thought we shouldn't. It's all about balance.

This skirt would also look fantastic with a midriff-baring burnout tank, if you were so inclined.

As we approach the new season, get back into your closet and play. It will give you inspiration to mix things up like never before.

And know, it's okay to go against the grain.

IGwhitedayInstagram.

I resisted it forever.

While my account is years old, I only became active on it a few weeks ago. I wish I had more time to devote to the various social media platforms. But I don't. In fact, if it wasn't for the urging of clients, I'm not sure I'd be on Instagram.

My biggest hurdle was figuring out my angle. When I founded my styling business, I made a conscious decision to not post before-and-after pictures of clients on my website (I'm all about confidentiality). And, I was not going to post pictures of what I was wearing, as my business is about what my clients are wearing.

Perplexed, I procrastinated — wondering how to utilize the tool to inspire clients, friends and family. Then it hit me. What if I post style vignettes? Ahh, that works. That feels right.

So today was my 'all-white Tuesday' vignette — showing a portion of my white ripped-up jeans and white popover tunic. A little Parisian edge. It's not forced. And more importantly, it seems to resonate with others.

The pressure is off and I'm simply having fun. Which is the point, right? So find me on Instagram and let's enjoy style together!

A few months ago, I wanted to add another pair of colored jeans into my wardrobe for spring. Something light — both in color and weight — and something that played nicely with my red hair. Immediately, these light aqua beauties by Seven for all Mankind caught my eye. Paired with colorful tunics, I am set.

I was chatting with a client the other day about color combinations. So, I thought I would show you how to bring in various colors with this particular pair of colored jeans. While there are even more options, this covers the basics — side by side color pairings, complementary color pairings, as well as the atypical.

The bottom line, explore! Challenge yourself to step outside of the box. You will have so much fun doing so.

Are you ready for spring or what?

After an incredibly bizarre weekend of weather, I do believe I am ready to move on. Saturday went from snow (ginormous flakes) to steam to sun to sleet. In less than nine hours. Never have I experienced such a thing. And ever since, I've been freezing my tushie off.

Winter, it's time for you to pack your bags.

Just in time for a little spring fashion fun, don't you think? Neiman Marcus and scoopCharlotte invite you to come celebrate the launch of CUSP by Neiman Marcus on Thursday, March 14th from 6-9pm. Your hosts for the evening — my sisters in style, Sonya Barnes and Erica Hanks, and yours truly. An evening you won't want to miss.

springfornowWith teaser weather like this, no wonder mass confusion sets in on the streets of what to wear.

However, there are many options to consider. If you walk away remembering only one, you'll be better prepared to take on the next 70 degree day in the dead of winter.

Be a Fair Weather Dresser
  • Mix spring colors into your winter palette (scarf, skirt, coat)
  • Utilize feather-light layers
  • Put a long sleeve fitted shirt under summer tops and dresses
  • Take a multi-functioning wrap/scarf along with you (perfect over a short sleeve tee)
  • Opt for wedges and open toe shoes instead of boots
When in doubt, wear all white! It's absolutely acceptable year round.
