Fall, come on in! We are expecting you.
If I had to pick just three concepts to summarize what this upcoming season is all about, it would be: beyond basics, volume exploration and fantabulous fur. And boy am I excited!
Starting with color, we will continue to see pink, in clothing and accessories, such as handbags. Red, specifically oxblood, is at the forefront. Blues, greens and earth tones share the scene. And the infamous black and white duo are still going strong.
The vibe of the season is two-toned — relaxed sophistication. Prints take a backseat to solids. Among the typical fabrics for fall, there is no denying the attraction to leather and fur. And embellished goodness graces the department stores.
Pants gain volume, both by way of a high waist and wide leg for a loose fit. Jumpsuits become a ‘want to wear’ situation, the best styles by Thakoon Addition and Veronica Beard. Hem lengths vary from shin sweeping to short. More pleats are present this season, as are flirty skirts and dresses worn with thigh high boots. And the return of the sweater.
Interesting side cut-aways, as seen by Opening Ceremony and Theory, allow for playful proportions. Go for length in layers — cropped sweaters over super long tops and blouses. Billowy sleeves are ever present this fall, and a few cropped trapezoid shapes (Sally LaPointe). Cropped and shorter length jackets are great for visual interest, as are sweaters around the waist and neck. However, proceed with caution with regard to voluminous-atop-voluminous garments.
This season, a huge emphasis is put on outerwear. While some cuts are still boxy, the most prevalent is the fit and flare, as seen at Celine. Anything fur (bold color, animal print, colorblock) or shearling is a winner. Double-face wool-felt or cashmere wrap coats are also great additions.
Shoes go flat, yet again this season, from ballet to sneakers. And no surprise that boots trump everything. If you want a stiletto version, cutout boot styles are aplenty. Handbags go back to streamlined shapes in luxe material. Jewelry takes note from the theme of the season and presents minimal beauties.
This is the season to welcome a few quality pieces into your wardrobe. And definitely include shoes and handbags!
