Most definitely, this is the best season of the year (my opinion, of course). This year, in particular, there is much to embrace. The themes — man detail, boxed out, punked, moto madness, schoolgirl — may need a few asterisks beside them, but you'll know what feels right and what doesn't work. Personally, I am not a fan of the oversized mens-inspired coats, yet I love the FW13 loafer or lace-up shoe. Big sweaters are a yes, but only if you can be found somewhere underneath. Punk doesn't have to be so obvious. Biker pants are major and moto jackets can be revived from seasons past (please don't wear together).
Cuts are all over the place. In a good way. Body con, pencil, A-line, flouncy, billowy, geometric. All super fabulous.
Divine black. Granted, the high contrast duo of black and white continues from spring to fall. However, black is drenched in deep, rich goodness that suddenly feels sexy. I cannot get enough. This is an area to explore beyond your normal approach.
I love the basic, yet dynamic, colors of the season. Blues, purples and reds are mainstream. And making a little bit of a splash is pink, as in grapefruit. It's sweet, and plays nicely with the bolder hues.
Detail is king this fall. Yummy fabrics such as leather, fur, suede, tweed, flannel and lace take center stage. In addition, embossing and laser cuts provide intricate styling. Wide and/or embellished belts make a comeback. Prints are subtly beautiful.
The season of the skirt! There are many takes on this particular trend. From ladylike to collegiate to chic and flirty. There is no denying its power. Paired with boots, loafers or heels, you can't go wrong. Time to dive back into your closet to rediscover those fun skirts.
It's not just me, obsessed with the white fur coat. Many designers showcased their version on the runway, making me happy to see such a plethora of options this year. I am loving the black/white combos, especially. But you can never go wrong with all white or off white.
With regard to accessories, jewelry is big around the neck (and in chains) and minimal around the wrist. Handbags are softly structured, with top handles, and mini-fied. Shoes go from the man flat to smashing heels to mini boots, and the return of the OTK boot. Details are studded (Valentino) and caged (Alexander McQueen). Oxblood and metallic nails are a big hit.
Makeup ranges from bold to creatively soft. And hair goes low pony, slicked back, long angled bangs, fancy-back updos, super straight and all undone.
Is your head spinning? No worries, you've got this!
And if you don't, call me.
